Which Galápagos cruise itinerary should you choose?
Choose a route that names Genovesa if its seabird colonies are your priority; choose a programme that explicitly reaches Fernandina and western Isabela for Punta Espinoza and Punta Vicente Roca; choose an Española landing at Punta Suárez if that walk is central to your trip. Eastern, northern and western are marketing shorthand, not standardised lists of stops.
The examples below are operator-published five-day, four-night naturalist programmes checked on 25 October 2026. They show actual trade-offs, not a promise that every departure will operate unchanged. Weather, Park instructions and operational decisions can alter visits. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Metropolitan Touring: Isabela II Northeast programmeGenovesa route: Isabela II Northeast, Monday to Friday
Day 1: arrive at Baltra, cross to Santa Cruz and visit the highlands before boarding in Puerto Ayora. Day 2: Puerto Egas on Santiago and Chinese Hat. Day 3: Prince Philip’s Steps and Darwin Bay on Genovesa. Day 4: Santa Fe and South Plaza. Day 5: breakfast and transfer to Baltra airport.
This route puts a full scheduled day on Genovesa and combines it with central-island visits. Choose it for that pairing, rather than assuming a northern label includes Fernandina. This published five-day sequence does not include Fernandina or Española. The first day’s tortoise-highlands outing is also different from a town-only Santa Cruz call.
Isabela II: day-by-day Northeast itineraryWestern wildlife and lava: Isabela II Northwest, Thursday to Monday
Day 1: Baltra arrival, Santa Cruz and the Charles Darwin Research Station before boarding. Day 2: Bartolomé and Sullivan Bay on Santiago. Day 3: Dragon Hill on Santa Cruz and Buccaneer Cove on Santiago. Day 4: Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela and Punta Espinoza on Fernandina. Day 5: transfer to Baltra airport.
This is the stronger of these two Isabela II examples if Fernandina is your non-negotiable stop. Punta Vicente Roca is a coastal dinghy visit without a landing; the published programme makes snorkelling weather-dependent. Do not convert the word Isabela into a promise of Puerto Villamil, Sierra Negra or a land-based southern-Isabela visit. This route reaches the island’s northwestern coast instead. It does not include Genovesa or Española.
Isabela II: day-by-day Northwest itineraryEspañola and San Cristóbal: La Pinta Southeast, Thursday to Monday
Day 1: arrive at Baltra, board and visit South Plaza. Day 2: Santa Fe, then San Cristóbal’s Cerro Colorado tortoise centre and town. Day 3: Punta Pitt and Cerro Brujo on San Cristóbal. Day 4: Punta Suárez and Gardner Bay on Española. Day 5: the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz, followed by the road, ferry and airport transfer to Baltra.
This route spends more of its programme on San Cristóbal and Española than either Isabela II example above. For an albatross-led booking, combine the named Punta Suárez stop with seasonal guidance; the island name alone does not guarantee the birds will be present. This route does not supply the Genovesa day or Fernandina landing in the other examples.
La Pinta: day-by-day Southeast itineraryCompare actual visitor sessions and walking demands
Count scheduled visits after the airport transfer and before the departure flight. In these examples the middle three days carry the main full-day programme, while the arrival day varies. South Plaza on arrival is a different use of that afternoon from a Santa Cruz highlands trip. Do not reject or choose a route on the headline day count alone.
Bartolomé involves a staircase climb; Punta Suárez includes lava and boulders; Genovesa’s Prince Philip’s Steps involves a cliff ascent. A shore landing, snorkel session, glass-bottom boat trip and panga ride are different activities. Match the stated session to your ability and interests, especially if you plan to skip swimming. Any alternative activity must be available on your actual programme, not merely somewhere in the vessel brochure.
Galápagos Conservancy: visitor sites, wet and dry landingsBook flights to the actual embarkation plan
All three examples above use Baltra for arrival, but a route elsewhere may use San Cristóbal. Match the flight and included transfer to the booked departure before paying. A visit to San Cristóbal during the cruise does not mean you should fly there to join La Pinta’s Baltra-starting Southeast programme.
Longer trips are worth comparing when you want more than one of these geographic clusters. Compare the full combined visitor-site list and transfer days; do not assume that adding two cruises avoids repeats. These are naturalist routes with shore visits and marine activities, not Darwin-and-Wolf scuba itineraries.
