Galápagos travel planning: choose your base and format first
For a first Galápagos trip, decide between a naturalist cruise and hotel-based travel before booking flights. A cruise gives you its named visitor-site route; a hotel stay gives you a town base with local visits and selected day excursions. Neither gives unrestricted access to the islands.
For a land-based trip, start with a concrete choice: Santa Cruz for Puerto Ayora, Tortuga Bay, the Research Station and highland tortoise visits; San Cristóbal for Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Interpretation Center trails and marine outings around León Dormido. Match the airport and available days to that choice.
Galápagos Conservancy: planning a trip1. Choose the format before buying the flights
A naturalist cruise follows a route and can navigate between visitor sites overnight. A land-based trip uses hotel nights and local visits or day excursions. A combined trip can work if the hotel days add something you specifically want rather than duplicating the cruise programme.
Choose a cruise for the particular route it offers, not a promise of seeing everything. Choose a hotel-based trip when a town base and more control over evenings matter. Staying ashore does not remove the need for organised boat outings or authorised guiding at protected visitor sites.
Use the detailed format comparison before committing to either a cabin or a chain of hotels.
Compare: naturalist cruise vs land-based travelChoose the seasonal window before buying flights
Compare warmer-water months with the cooler garúa season, the actual wildlife sites and how much time your programme spends aboard. A hotel-based trip can still contain several boat days.
Choose Galápagos dates for sea conditions and wildlife priorities2. Choose Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal for specific visits
Santa Cruz works for Puerto Ayora’s services, Tortuga Bay, the Research Station and highland tortoise areas. Puerto Ayora is on the south coast; Bellavista and Santa Rosa are inland alternatives that add road journeys to port departures. Baltra airport is on a separate island to the north.
San Cristóbal works for Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Interpretation Center trails, the highlands and excursions around León Dormido. Its airport is on the same island as the town. Choose it for those visits rather than expecting the same excursion list as Santa Cruz.
Isabela is another overnight option, but adding a base consumes transfer time. Begin with the visits that matter, then add an island only if it contributes a separate worthwhile part of the trip.
Santa Cruz: compare town and highland basesSan Cristóbal is a separate base, not a Santa Cruz day plan
If León Dormido, the Interpretation Center or San Cristóbal’s own highlands lead your list, compare a stay in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno before defaulting to Puerto Ayora. A two-base trip can work, but the move between islands belongs in the itinerary as travel time, not as a full visiting day.
San Cristóbal: plan a Puerto Baquerizo Moreno stay3. Fit the arrival airport around the programme
Baltra and San Cristóbal are the two main arrival airports. Baltra serves Santa Cruz through three stages: terminal bus to the Itabaca Channel, boat crossing to Santa Cruz, then bus or taxi through the island to Puerto Ayora. San Cristóbal airport is on the same island as Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Buy the flight that matches your first base. A Baltra arrival followed by a San Cristóbal hotel requires an additional inter-island connection; it is not a local airport transfer. For a cruise, follow its specific embarkation and disembarkation instructions.
Do not put your most important excursion into the arrival afternoon. Formalities, baggage and onward transport take time beyond the flight itself.
Compare Galápagos arrival airports and onward transfers4. Separate full visiting days from travel days
Count the days available after arrival formalities and before your return flight, not just the dates printed on the itinerary. An arrival afternoon or departure morning should not carry the one excursion you would be most disappointed to miss.
For a hotel-based trip, sketch each day as one of three types: local visit, booked boat excursion or transfer. If too many days combine all three, simplify the route. A transfer is not a wildlife outing simply because it takes place at sea.
For a cruise, read what happens on the first and last days. Check the named visitor sites and time ashore rather than assuming every advertised cruise day is a full day of excursions.
For a concrete starting route, use four Puerto Ayora nights over five days, or add three Puerto Baquerizo Moreno nights for an eight-day one-way trip. The detailed itinerary assigns each day, overnight base and airport transfer.
5-day and 8-day land-based itineraries5. Prepare entry and biosecurity separately from the holiday bookings
For a standard foreign adult, the park entry charge is US$200 and the separate tourist transit card is US$20. Arrange the TCT before the island flight, follow the mainland biosecurity process and keep the card available through departure. Reduced park categories and infant rules need their own check; use the detailed fee guide rather than assuming every traveller pays the adult amount.
ABG requires baggage inspection and a goods declaration. Check its permitted-product list before packing, and clean luggage, footwear and clothing so they do not carry seeds or other biological material. These steps remain separate from your hotel and excursion bookings.
Galápagos entry fees, transit card and biosecurity steps6. Budget for the trip you will actually take
Build an itemised basket: mainland connections, flights to and from the islands, accommodation or cabin, food not included, excursions, equipment, airport transfers, inter-island travel, government charges and insurance suited to the actual activities. Ask suppliers to mark inclusions and exclusions in writing.
A cheap room can be the wrong base for your planned outings. A higher package price may include some services but not all of them. Compare equivalent itineraries before deciding which is better value, and keep cancellation terms alongside the price.
If diving is central to the trip, treat it as a separate activity-planning decision. A naturalist cruise is not automatically a diving programme. Book a dedicated diving programme if that is the purpose of the trip; snorkelling on a naturalist itinerary is not the same product.
Galápagos travel cost: real package examples and the complete budget7. Make responsible visiting part of the daily plan
Keep at least two metres from wildlife and never feed or touch it. If an animal blocks your intended path, do not use your booking schedule as a reason to crowd it. Follow the instructions at the site and those of the authorised guide.
Do not collect shells, rocks, sand or wood. Reduce single-use plastics and use water and energy carefully: the visitor code highlights the pressure that tourism places on limited island resources. Use authorised accommodation, operators and accredited guides rather than treating an online listing as evidence of permission.
Remember that the inhabited islands are communities, not just departure points. Respect quiet hours and shared spaces, and choose local products and services where practical.

The direct inter-island boat connects Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It does not depart from Baltra airport. Keep the ferry move on a separate day from a full-day excursion, and sleep on Santa Cruz before a Baltra departure rather than relying on a tight same-day return crossing.

If the format is still uncertain, compare a naturalist cruise and a hotel-based trip against the same priorities. Once you have chosen the format, request an exact route or excursion list and confirm the arrival and departure arrangements before paying for flights.
Do not try to settle every island, wildlife season and activity from one overview. Use this guide to put the decisions in order, then verify the details with the authority or provider responsible for them.
Next: cruise vs land-based comparisonAdd Isabela only when the island sequence works
For southern Isabela, stay in Puerto Villamil and allow full days for its local visits. The direct boat from Puerto Ayora makes Santa Cruz the ferry hub; there is no direct passenger-boat leg between Isabela and San Cristóbal in the published network. Choose a two-base or three-base sequence before adding another hotel booking.

Galápagos Conservancy: planning a tripBuy the flight for the right island
Compare Quito and Guayaquil connections only after choosing Baltra for Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal for Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Check each flight’s stops, required baggage and return itinerary, and leave time for the TCT and biosecurity before boarding. A low fare is not a saving if it forces an extra island crossing or overnight.
Flights to Galápagos: mainland connections and island arrivalsChoose the hotel island before the room
For a hotel-based trip, compare Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal and Puerto Villamil on Isabela before reserving rooms. On Santa Cruz, the town side, Punta Estrada across the bay and inland highland lodges require different transfers. On San Cristóbal, compare the central waterfront with the Playa Mann side of town.
