Where a land-based dive day fits
Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz is a practical base for combining scuba days with wildlife walks and boat excursions. A day-diving booking returns you to land accommodation; it does not provide the remote northern programme of a specialist dive liveaboard.
Scuba Iguana runs two-dive days from its Santa Cruz operation, with sites including North Seymour, Mosquera, Punta Carrión, Gordon Rocks and Bartolomé/Cousins Rock. These are named examples from one operator, not a complete island-wide service list or a guarantee that every site runs on your dates. Choose the site and experience requirement before arranging the surrounding hotel nights.
Scuba Iguana: daily sites, inclusions and itineraryGordon Rocks is not the default first dive
Gordon Rocks is east of Santa Cruz. Scuba Iguana describes strong to very strong currents and few visual references. The attraction is the possibility of hammerheads and other larger marine life, not a reliable shark encounter.
The operator’s current booking notes specify Advanced certification or higher and at least 25 dives, or its own evaluation at other sites, with the last dive within 12 months. Its general equipment text also says Open Water is sufficient for all sites, which conflicts with those specific Gordon Rocks notes. Use the stricter, site-specific requirement when planning and obtain acceptance of your actual certification, logbook and recent experience before paying. An evaluation is the operator’s decision, not a waiver you can assume.
If you are newly qualified, have not dived recently or have little current experience, do not build the trip around Gordon Rocks. Ask for a suitable assessment day elsewhere first. Certification alone does not establish comfort in local conditions.
Scuba Iguana: Gordon Rocks conditions and specific entry requirementsNorth Seymour, Mosquera and Punta Carrión
Scuba Iguana lists North Seymour and Mosquera among its Open Water-level day sites. These give a land-based diver alternatives to Gordon Rocks, but that entry qualification is not a promise of calm water. The operator pairs sites according to its authorised programme and the conditions.
Punta Carrión is at the end of the Itabaca Channel. The operator describes a protected sandy and rocky area before the gorge exposed to currents. That distinction matters: a sheltered starting area does not make the whole route a beginner exercise. Give the centre your real experience and let it select the dive plan.
Do not confuse a North Seymour scuba booking with the island’s naturalist landing walk, or a Santa Fe scuba day with a Santa Fe snorkelling trip. The same island name can identify different activities, equipment and permissions.
Scuba Iguana: named day-dive sites and qualification levelsAllow a whole day, including the road transfer
Scuba Iguana’s sample day starts at its dive centre at 08:00 and returns around 15:00. For most sites it describes a roughly 45-minute taxi journey to the Itabaca Channel, followed by a boat leg of 45–90 minutes depending on the site. These are its planning estimates, not fixed departure or return guarantees.
The sample programme has two dives with a surface interval, snacks and lunch. The listed package includes standard equipment, two air tanks and a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit. Nitrox, a dive computer, DIN adapters and private guiding appear as extras; do not assume that an air-tank package includes them. Declare equipment sizes and bring your certification and logbook.
Avoid a same-day inter-island ferry commitment after the advertised return. A changed site, sea conditions or a delayed boat can consume that margin.
Scuba Iguana: sample day and equipment inclusionsLeave a non-diving interval before flying
Put dive days earlier in the holiday rather than on the afternoon before departure. The interval runs from the end of the last dive to the flight, not from hotel checkout or the boat’s return. Inter-island flights count as flights too.
For asymptomatic recreational divers making air dives within no-decompression limits, DAN recommends at least 12 hours before flying after a single dive and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or diving across multiple days. A two-dive excursion belongs in the multiple-dive category. Longer intervals reduce risk further; these minima do not guarantee avoidance of decompression sickness or replace a more conservative instruction for your actual diving.
DAN advises seeking medical advice and avoiding flying with symptoms that may indicate decompression sickness. Obtain individual medical guidance if needed rather than using a travel itinerary as clearance.
DAN: flying-after-diving guidance and its limitationsWhen your goal needs a specialist liveaboard
Darwin and Wolf cannot be reached on an ordinary day-diving tour from the inhabited islands. Scuba Iguana explicitly distinguishes these remote sites from its local programme. A standard naturalist cruise is not a substitute for a dedicated diving itinerary either.
For a mixed holiday, book local days that match your ability and retain time for land visits. If Darwin and Wolf are the main reason for travelling, choose a specialist diving programme instead; this guide does not rank dive vessels or compare liveaboard destinations.
