Floreana, Galápagos: day trip, overnight stay or cruise?

Choose a Floreana visit for the highlands and village, or a cruise calling at Post Office Bay and Punta Cormorant. These are different trips, not interchangeable stops.

Which Floreana visit should you book?

Include Floreana if you want the settlement history around Puerto Velasco Ibarra and Asilo de la Paz, or a naturalist cruise visiting the northern coastal sites. Choose the village and highlands for a land-based day or overnight visit. Choose a cruise with named Floreana calls for Punta Cormorant, Post Office Bay and the offshore snorkelling sites. A ticket saying only “Floreana” does not establish which of those you will see.

For a short first trip, do not add a Floreana hotel simply to increase your island count. An organised day excursion from Santa Cruz avoids another hotel change; staying overnight makes more sense when time in the settlement is itself a priority. This is a trip-planning recommendation, not a minimum-stay rule.

Puerto Velasco Ibarra and Asilo de la Paz

Puerto Velasco Ibarra is the settlement to look for when booking a land-based Floreana visit. Asilo de la Paz is in the highlands, reached by vehicle from the port area, rather than a coastal cruise landing. Its historical attractions include the freshwater spring and caves associated with early settlement.

Be Galapagos advertises a Santa Cruz day tour that combines the highlands and Asilo de la Paz with lunch, a coastal walk and snorkelling. The programme also mentions viewing Devil’s Crown on the return. Viewing the formation is not the same as a booked snorkel there, and the advertised day does not list Post Office Bay as one of its visits.

Punta Cormorant and Post Office Bay

Punta Cormorant is a coastal wildlife stop with a lagoon and contrasting greenish and pale beaches. Flamingos and shorebirds are reasons to choose it, but sightings are not guaranteed. It is not the village harbour, and a hotel booking in Puerto Velasco Ibarra does not include a visit there.

Post Office Bay has the postcard barrel associated with the whalers’ postal tradition. Visitors can leave addressed cards or take one they can genuinely deliver. Treat it as a named excursion stop: do not assume a village day tour reaches the barrel.

A concrete cruise example is Ecoventura’s 2026 Beaches and Bays route. Its Floreana day names Punta Cormorant, snorkelling at Devil’s Crown or Champion Islet, and Post Office Bay, with a Zodiac or paddleboard outing at Baroness Point. The “or” matters: it does not promise both snorkel sites. Use the dated programme for your actual yacht, not a generic southern-islands map.

Devil’s Crown is a separate water activity

Devil’s Crown is an eroded offshore volcanic formation, not a beach you can walk to from your hotel. Galápagos Conservancy describes rough water and strong current here. Do not choose it on the assumption that every snorkel stop is suitable for a beginner or that a sheltered-looking section guarantees easy conditions.

If this is the reason for your visit, the booking needs to identify a snorkelling activity at Devil’s Crown, not merely a cruise past it. The guide and crew determine whether the planned activity can operate in the conditions. Do not attempt the submerged passages described in older destination material as an independent activity.

Getting there: a tour is not an inter-island ferry

The verified day-tour option starts on Santa Cruz and returns there. Be Galapagos lists Monday, Wednesday and Friday departures with a minimum of ten passengers, subject to availability of its named yacht, Galapagos Element Wind. Those are the seller’s advertised conditions checked on 25 October 2026, not a daily public-ferry timetable or a confirmed departure for your date.

For an overnight stay, secure the outward and return boat arrangements together with the room. This guide does not have a verified current public-ferry timetable for Floreana. In particular, do not transfer the familiar Santa Cruz–Isabela or Santa Cruz–San Cristóbal pattern to this route. Return to the island of your flight before departure day; the amount of buffer is an editorial risk choice, not a guarantee against disruption.

What a day trip costs, and when an overnight adds value

Be Galapagos displayed US$340 per person for its Floreana day tour when checked on 25 October 2026. Its listed inclusions are a guide, transportation, lunch and snacks, tea, coffee and water, towels, mask, snorkel and fins, and a local fee. Wetsuits and alcoholic drinks are excluded. This is one seller’s advertised product, not an island-wide tariff or a live seat quote.

An overnight stay buys time ashore rather than automatic access to the cruise sites. Compare the complete room, meals, transfers and guided-activity quote with the day tour, and retain the named sites in writing. If your priority is only Post Office Bay or Punta Cormorant, select a programme that actually visits them instead of adding hotel nights and hoping to arrange access after arrival.
