Floreana Island hotels: Wittmer or Lava Lodge?

Compare Hostal Wittmer’s beachfront guesthouse with Floreana Lava Lodge’s independent cabins, then arrange the room, boat transfers and meals as one workable stay.

Where to stay on Floreana Island

For a Floreana Island hotel, start with Hostal Wittmer in Puerto Velasco Ibarra or Floreana Lava Lodge, also listed in the settlement area. Wittmer suits travellers looking for a simple beachfront guesthouse linked to the island’s settlement history. Lava Lodge suits travellers who prefer an independent cabin and a land-based programme arranged through a seller. These are comparisons of published property descriptions, not first-hand hotel reviews.

The useful choice here is between accommodation formats, not a long list of resort districts. Neither booking should be treated as proof of boat access, a confirmed guided excursion or current room availability. Get those components agreed before paying a non-refundable room rate.

Hostal Wittmer: simple rooms by the black-sand beach

Galapagos PRO describes Hostal Wittmer as a simple guesthouse on the beach, founded by the author of Floreana and run by her family. Its listing specifies simply furnished rooms with private bathrooms and views of the black-sand beach, homemade meals using locally grown produce, a ceiling fan, terrace and hammock, and refrigerator.

Choose it if the family history, beachfront position and guesthouse format are the appeal. The published description is not a promise of air-conditioning, reliable high-speed internet or a full-service resort. If cooling, stairs, bed configuration or a specific room view would determine whether you can stay comfortably, make those explicit conditions of your booking rather than inferring them from a photograph.

Wittmer appears under several similar names in travel material, including Pension Wittmer and Hostal Wittmer Lodge. Match the property and room description in the quote so that a name variation does not become an accidental substitute booking.

Floreana Lava Lodge: independent cabins

Galapagos Travel Center lists Floreana Lava Lodge, formerly Red Mangrove Floreana Lodge, in Puerto Velasco Ibarra, approximately 0.50 km from the town centre. The seller describes ten independent cabins, each with a private bathroom and front porch. Its room text specifies two twin beds, with bunk beds for up to three people also described.

This is the more relevant starting point if you want a cabin rather than a guesthouse room, or need to discuss a three-person layout. Do not assume that every cabin has the same beds: reserve the exact configuration and permitted occupancy. Breakfast is listed, but that does not establish that all meals or excursions are included.

The seller explicitly says its hotel stays are sold as part of a Galápagos land-based tour. That is a condition of this sales channel, not proof that every seller requires a package. Ask for the accommodation, transfer and excursion components separately in the quote so you can see what the programme actually contains.

Compare the complete stay rather than an isolated room rate

Neither of these inspected property listings supplies a dated room rate that can be used as a reliable current nightly price. Request a quote for your dates and actual occupancy. A useful comparison includes the named room or cabin, taxes, breakfast and other meals, outward and return boat arrangements, arrival transfer, guided visits, snorkelling equipment and cancellation terms.

For Wittmer, establish whether the homemade meals described by the seller are included in your particular booking. For Lava Lodge, distinguish its listed breakfast from any additional meal plan sold with the land-based programme. A low room-only figure is not directly comparable with a package covering boats and guided activities.

Do not use an old directory’s “only hotel” claim to infer that there are no alternatives. The two current seller listings already describe different properties. Equally, a search result naming another guesthouse is not enough to establish that it is operating or accepting bookings for your dates.

Arrange access before locking the hotel nights

Puerto Velasco Ibarra is the land-based arrival and stay focus. An organised excursion returning to Santa Cruz is not automatically a transfer you can use for a hotel stay. Be Galapagos’s published Floreana day tour, for example, has its own passenger minimum and vessel-availability condition; it is not evidence of a public boat departing every day.

This guide does not quote a current Floreana ferry fare or timetable because neither has been verified. Obtain confirmed outward and return arrangements for the exact stay, and keep time back on your flight-departure island before the mainland flight. If a hotel can only confirm the room, retain the access question as unresolved rather than treating the booking as a complete trip.

The highlands and Asilo de la Paz are a different visit from Post Office Bay and Punta Cormorant. Require the names of the excursions included with the stay: “Floreana activities” is too vague to establish that the places you want are covered.

Be Galapagos: the separate day-tour format and operating conditions

When to stay overnight, and when to remain on Santa Cruz

Choose a Floreana overnight for time in the settlement and a stay whose small guesthouse or cabin format is part of the appeal. A two-night allowance can leave a full day between arrival and departure for a separately arranged highland visit; that is an editorial pacing suggestion, not a verified package or ferry pattern. Only use it if the boats work on your dates.

Remain on Santa Cruz if you want a wider choice of hotels and a Floreana visit without another room change. Choose a naturalist cruise instead if your specific priorities are the northern visitor sites named in its route. Paying for a Floreana bed does not turn a village stay into a Post Office Bay or Devil’s Crown itinerary.
