Pinzón day tour: snorkelling from Santa Cruz

A Pinzón day tour is mainly a boat-and-snorkelling excursion from Puerto Ayora. Compare the actual water stops, wetsuit inclusion and fishing time rather than expecting a walking visit on Pinzón.

What the Pinzón tour actually visits

Bahía Pingüino, also called Penguin Bay, is the main named snorkelling stop in the Pinzón programmes examined here. The day is centred on the water around the island. A walk at La Fe or Las Palmas is on Santa Cruz, not evidence of a walking landing on Pinzón itself.

Choose this day if snorkelling is your priority and you are comfortable spending much of the excursion on a small boat or in the water. If you mainly want a guided land walk to see nesting birds or land iguanas, compare North Seymour or an explicitly landing-based Santa Fe programme instead. Do not buy from an island name alone.

Grupo Galápagos: Pinzón itinerary and La Fe stop

Penguin Bay, extra stops and wildlife expectations

Tesoro Galapagos lists Penguin Bay, Dumb Islet and a return stop at La Fe or Las Palmas. Its detailed itinerary says the water and land locations depend on weather. Grupo Galápagos instead describes Penguin Bay followed by lunch and a possible La Fe walk, with the captain deciding whether conditions permit the walk. These are different products, not stops every Pinzón departure must include.

Both sellers describe turtles, reef fish, sharks and other marine wildlife. Treat those as possible encounters. The name Penguin Bay does not guarantee penguins, and no species checklist is a promise for your day.

Tesoro describes a protected cove at Penguin Bay but also a steep wall with current at Dumb Islet. Do not extend the sheltered-cove description to every proposed water stop or treat promotional claims about all ages and abilities as a safety assessment.

How much of the day is spent travelling?

The departure base is Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. Grupo Galápagos advertises a 7–8-hour day and two hours of sailing each way; Tesoro describes a 6–7-hour excursion with different route-leg estimates. Boat, route and sea state affect the balance between navigation and time in the water. Neither description establishes a universal crossing time.

Keep the whole day free and stay on Santa Cruz that night rather than tying a ferry or flight to the advertised return. If seasickness or prolonged boat travel is a major concern, an independently accessible shore outing may suit you better.

Pickup also varies. Tesoro specifies hotel transport for private charters and pier meeting for individual bookings. Grupo Galápagos mentions hotel pickup in the itinerary but transfer from its office in the inclusions. Get the actual meeting place in the booking confirmation rather than assuming hotel collection.

Compare inclusions before comparing prices

Wetsuits are a material difference: Grupo Galápagos lists a full wetsuit and snorkelling equipment as included; Tesoro lists snorkelling gear and towels but excludes wetsuits. A mask-and-fins inclusion alone does not tell you whether thermal protection is supplied.

Both examples list lunch and snacks. Tesoro includes fishing gear and describes fishing on the route; Grupo Galápagos also describes fishing, calling participation optional. If you do not want fishing to take up the day, choose the actual departure accordingly rather than expecting a dedicated snorkelling-only product.

Compare the final written total for the chosen boat and date, including wetsuit, transfers, drinks and any separate charges. The two seller descriptions are useful product examples, not confirmation of seats, a current fare or the boat assigned to your booking.

Swimming ability and what to take

Describe your swimming confidence honestly before booking, including whether you need flotation or help with a boat ladder. Ask how the group is supervised in the water and whether you may remain aboard during a stop. A sheltered bay can still require open-water entries and exits. Children need an assessment of the actual boat and day, not a generic all-ages label.

Take sun protection, a reusable water bottle, swimwear, a dry change of clothes and a protected bag for electronics. Establish wetsuit size and availability before departure. Follow the guide’s entry and exit instructions; do not touch or pursue wildlife to reproduce a seller’s photograph.
