How do you get from Baltra airport to Puerto Ayora?
The route has three stages: airport bus on Baltra, barge across the Itabaca Channel, then road transport across Santa Cruz to Puerto Ayora. A taxi on Santa Cruz replaces the final road leg; it does not remove the channel crossing.
Use this route for a Puerto Ayora hotel stay. If you are joining a cruise, follow the confirmed meeting instructions instead: the bus operator also lists a separate Baltra airport-to-pier route, so boarding any bus without checking its destination can take you to the wrong meeting point.

Continue across the island to Puerto Ayora
From the Santa Cruz side, take a bus or taxi toward Puerto Ayora on the south coast. The operator estimates 45 minutes to an hour for this road stage. With a bus, distinguish the town drop-off from a guaranteed hotel-door service; arrange any final leg to your actual accommodation.

How long should you allow?
The airport’s published estimates are approximately 10 minutes on the first bus, 10 minutes on the barge, then 45 minutes to an hour on the road. They are moving times for separate legs, not a guaranteed door-to-door transfer duration. Arrival procedures and queues come before or between them.
Keep the arrival day flexible. A prepaid tour departing Puerto Ayora soon after your scheduled landing gives you little room for a delayed flight or a wait at the channel. If a highlands stop is part of your transfer, allow time for that visit as well as the road journey.
Choose where to stay and what to do on Santa CruzWhat does the transfer cost?
Lobito’s own website currently displays US$5 for the national and international tourist fare and US$2.50 for children under 12 and passengers with disabilities. Those are the bus operator’s displayed categories, not a complete airport-to-hotel price. Confirm the category that applies when buying the ticket.
The airport operator separately lists estimated prices of US$1 for the barge, US$2.50 for the Santa Cruz bus and US$25 for a taxi. Its page explicitly warns that suppliers can change fees. Treat those last-leg figures as the airport’s published estimates, not verified fixed tariffs for your travel date. This guide does not combine them into a guaranteed transfer total.
A private-transfer quote should identify the people and bags covered, whether the taxi figure is for the vehicle, and whether airport bus, barge and hotel delivery are included. Compare quotes on the whole route rather than one headline number.
Lobito: displayed passenger fare categoriesBus or taxi after the crossing?
The bus is the option to compare when keeping the road-leg cost down matters and you can manage a final connection from its town drop-off. A taxi is useful for a direct accommodation destination or an agreed stop in the highlands. Neither choice changes the first two stages from Baltra.
If booking a transfer in advance, ask for the exact meeting point: the airport terminal and the Santa Cruz side of the channel are different places. For a party with substantial luggage, mobility needs or a child seat requirement, get written confirmation of arrangements for all three stages. A vehicle booking alone does not establish step-free boarding on the barge.
Airport operator: bus and taxi alternativesReturning from Puerto Ayora to Baltra airport
Reverse the complete sequence: road to the Santa Cruz side of Itabaca, barge to Baltra, then airport bus to the terminal. A driver who takes you to the channel has not delivered you to the airport check-in area.
Work backward from the airline’s check-in deadline and obtain the current local departure arrangements before your return day. No first-bus or last-barge timetable is verified in this guide. Keep a margin for the channel and bus stages rather than using only the road driving time. An inter-island boat arrival on the morning of a mainland flight adds another separate dependency.
